Abstract

Sleep disorders are becoming increasingly prevalent in fast-developing and developed societies, affecting over half of the world's population. These disorders are regarded as major contributors to various social issues, including neurological and psychiatric conditions, drowsy driving, occupational hazards, and heightened cardiovascular disease risk. While several studies have assessed sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), few have focused on the Ghanaian working population. This study aimed to validate the PSQI among a cross-section of Ghanaian working professionals. Using a simple random sampling technique, data was collected from 200 participants across various employment sectors. The PSQI, a self-administered questionnaire assessing sleep quality over one month, was utilized. Statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics, t-tests, and regression analysis, were performed using SPSS version 26. The findings revealed significant differences in sleep duration between male and female participants, with females reporting longer sleep duration. The study contributes to the understanding of sleep patterns and sleep quality among the Ghanaian working population and highlights the need for further research in this area.
